The Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship 2023 started with a bang, and Malaysia’s team, led by World No. 4 Lee Zii Jia, proved to be unstoppable. Lee Zii Jia shone on Tuesday, defeating local shuttler Bharath Latheesh in just 30 minutes to give the defending champions a 1-0 lead overall. But Lee’s success didn’t stop there. His compatriot Goh Jin Wei also secured a quick victory in the women’s singles, while Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi won the men’s doubles, and Tan Pearly and Thinnaah Muralitharan and Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing dominated the women’s doubles and mixed doubles matches, respectively.
But the spotlight is on Lee Zii Jia, who’s hoping for a new beginning at this team event after a recent string of struggles. Despite winning the Asian title and the Thailand Open last May, he’s been unable to regain his form and reach past the round of 16 on six occasions. Plus, he’s without a coach since parting ways with Indra Wijaya last November. With the All England Championships in March looming, can Lee Zii Jia make a comeback and challenge for the men’s singles title? Only time will tell.
