He is the two-time world champion and the favorite to win the German Open 2023, but Kento Momota of Japan had a nightmare start in his quarter-final match against his fellow countryman Nishimoto Kenta. He lost the first set 15-21 and looked like he was going to crash out of the tournament.
But then something amazing happened. Momota found his groove and fought back to win the next two sets 21-17 and 21-12. He showed why he is the best badminton player in the world right now with his incredible skills and resilience.
He is now one step closer to winning his first title of the year and adding another trophy to his impressive collection. He will face Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the semi-final tonight, who beat Chia Hao Lee of Chinese Taipei in straight sets.
The other semi-final will be between Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long and China’s Li Shi Feng. Ng Ka Long advanced after his opponent Lu Guang Zu of China retired hurt in the second set, while Li Shi Feng defeated Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei.
In the women’s competition, Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China and two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan also reached the semi-finals with hard-fought wins over Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand and Wang Zhi Yi of China respectively.
