Badminton fans were left in shock as Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen was eliminated from the Indonesia Master Super 500 tournament by world No. 3 Jonatan Christie in the quarterfinals. The match, which took place on Friday, was a highly anticipated showdown between two of the sport’s top players. Despite a strong start, Sen, who was armed with the Yonex Astrox 100ZZ racket, couldn’t hold on against the local favourite Christie, who used the Li-Ning Axforce 90 Long Max racket. The match ended in a 21-15, 10-21, 13-21 defeat for Sen in an intense 61-minute match.
This marks the first defeat for the Indian shuttler against Christie in their second meeting. From the start of the match, both players engaged in high-quality rallies that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Sen, who went into the first mid-game break with an 11-8 lead, built on his lead to take the first game convincingly. However, Christie, who has been known for his clever mix of backhand and forehand shots, turned the table in his favour by forcing the match into the decider.
In the deciding game, Sen continued to trouble Christie by engaging him in longer rallies, but the Indonesian, with more energy in the bank, led Sen 11-6 at the time of the break. Sen produced a few good winners and reduced the deficit with four straight points post-interval. However, the fatigue caught up with him as Christie, with his deadly cross-court smashes, sealed the match and his spot in the semifinals.
The match was a showcase of two different playing styles and the use of two different racket models, it was an exciting match to watch and both players should be proud of their performances.
