An Se Young, using the Yonex Astrox 77 Pro racket, became the first player from Korea to win the India Open Super 750 title by defeating the world no.1 and two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi, using the Yonex Astrox 100ZZ racket, who was on a three-match winning streak on the BWF World Tour.
Young, lost the opening game 15-21 but came back strong with solid defense and an array of strokes to win the second game 21-16 and force a deciding game. In the final game, Young, who had lost her last four matches against Yamaguchi, including the Malaysia Open final last week, recovered from a 2-4 deficit using shrewd net play and immaculate slow crosscourt drops to take an 11-8 lead at the interval.
The game saw both players engage in two breathtaking rallies – 32 and 51 shots- as Young, who used sharp attacks complemented with solid defense, retrieved world no.1 Yamaguchi’s killing returns to score points with angled strokes. After the win, Young celebrated and acknowledged the support of the Indian spectators.
The match lasted for one hour and two minutes.
